On 3 March, a Batteryshelter was installed at the home of Harry Wolkenfelt, owner of the insurance advisory firm Solarif<\/a>. Solarif focuses on insurance, risk management and project mediation within the solar energy sector. The installation was carried out by Lex van den Acker and Tom Bruijne from Solurion.<\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

Conduct: You advise owners and future owners about risks within the energy transition. What changes are you currently seeing due to the rapid rise of home batteries?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: What I see is that we are entering a new phase. With solar panels, the focus was mainly on energy generation. That was relatively straightforward. With home batteries, we are adding energy storage to the home. And storage means a concentration of energy. That fundamentally changes the risk profile. It is no longer only about the electrical installation, but also about thermal stability, fire development and consequential damage to the home. This is a new risk category.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct: What do insurers specifically look at when assessing a home with a home battery? Which factors determine whether something is acceptable or not?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: The key question is always: if something goes wrong, how large could the damage become? Three things play a role in that: where the battery is located, how it is installed, and how manageable an incident would be. A battery placed in a living space or an indoor storage room presents a different scenario than installation outside the home. In addition, certification, correct installation and compliance with standards are essential. Ultimately, acceptance revolves around damage limitation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct: What do you think should happen in regulations and standards for EOS systems under 20 kWh?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: We need clarity and uniformity. At the moment, I still see too many differences in interpretation. Municipalities, installers and insurers do not always assess the same installation in the same way. For systems under 20 kWh, there should be a clear national guideline regarding placement, ventilation and minimum fire resistance. That would prevent discussions afterwards and bring stability to the market. Regulation should create predictability for owners, installers and insurers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct: Which risks are still underestimated in practice when batteries are installed in or around the home?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: The development of a battery fire is often underestimated. It is not a typical fire. The heat development and the duration can be significant. Even though the chance is small, the impact of incorrect placement can be extremely large. That difference in perspective is important.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct: You chose external placement in a Batteryshelter at your own home. What made that decision decisive for you as a risk specialist?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: My battery is placed outside. That is a very conscious choice. By placing it externally, I literally remove the primary risk from my home. With the Batteryshelter, I protect my installation against possible external damage and contamination. This not only reduces the fire risk but also the risk of technical disruptions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct: To what extent do you expect external placement or additional fire-resistant measures to become part of future acceptance requirements?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: I expect this to increasingly become part of acceptance conditions, especially as the number of installations grows and more damage data becomes available.<\/p>\n

A battery installed externally in a protected enclosure will be assessed differently from a battery placed in a utility room. Markets always move towards professionalisation, and that will happen here as well. That is typical with new technologies.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct: What does an incident with a home battery mean for insurability, premium development and liability?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: Incidents always influence policy conditions. Historically, this has happened with every new technology. If damage results from improper installation or failure to follow regulations, liability can shift to the installer or supplier. If a series of incidents occurs, insurers will adjust their acceptance policies and premiums. The market learns from damage experiences.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct:<\/strong> What role do installers play in keeping risks manageable? Where does it still go wrong in practice?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: Installers are crucial. The quality of the installation work largely determines the risk profile. What I sometimes see is that commercial pressure leads to rapid installation, where location selection and compliance with installation guidelines receive insufficient attention. A battery is not a standard appliance. It requires risk-aware craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conduct:<\/strong> Looking ahead to the next five years: how will regulations, standards and insurance conditions develop around battery storage?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: I expect further standardisation and more consistent guidelines. Battery storage will become a normal part of homes, but within clear safety frameworks and with stricter assessment. We are moving from pioneering to structuring.<\/p>\n

Conduct:<\/strong> What would you advise homeowners who are considering a home battery?<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Harry Wolkenfelt: Look beyond return on investment and payback time. Also consider placement, safety and insurability. Choose a certified installer. Make sure you are well informed about the location of the installation and discuss it with your insurer before installation. A home battery is a logical step in the energy transition, but only if risk and return are balanced.<\/p>\n
