{"id":2407,"date":"2021-09-10T13:51:01","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T13:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conduct.nl\/emc-zoneconcept\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T16:33:02","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T14:33:02","slug":"emc-zoning-concept","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/conduct.nl\/en\/emc-zoning-concept\/","title":{"rendered":"EMC Zoning Concept"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"251\" data-end=\"298\"><strong>EMC Zoning Concept for PV Installations<\/strong><br \/>\nThe EMC zoning concept (<em data-start=\"324\" data-end=\"355\">Electromagnetic Compatibility<\/em>) divides an installation into Lightning Protection Zones (LPZ). Each zone represents a different exposure level to lightning currents and electromagnetic induction. For PV systems, the following definitions and measures apply:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"630\"><strong>LPZ 0A &#8211; Unprotected outdoor zone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"793\">This is the area where the PV installation is located, such as on the rooftop. If no lightning protection system (LPS) is present, the system is exposed to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"878\">\n<li data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"821\">\n<p data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"821\">Direct lightning strikes;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"822\" data-end=\"878\">\n<p data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"878\">Full lightning current surges on cables and inverters.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"898\">In this situation:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"1173\">\n<li data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"977\">\n<p data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"977\">A Type 1 SPD (surge protection device) must be installed on the DC side;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"1063\">\n<p data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1063\">This also applies when an LPS is present and physically connected to the PV system;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1064\" data-end=\"1173\">\n<p data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1173\">Equipotential bonding must be established between the external LPS and the grounding point at the inverter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1175\" data-end=\"1215\"><strong>LPZ 0B &#8211; Protected outdoor zone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1352\">This zone is within the protective angle of lightning air-termination rods, without direct conductive connection to the PV installation:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1474\">\n<li data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1388\">\n<p data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1388\">Protected against direct strikes;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1389\" data-end=\"1474\">\n<p data-start=\"1391\" data-end=\"1474\">Electrically isolated from the LPS by maintaining the required separation distance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1568\">Only induced voltages may occur here.<br data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"1520\" \/>\u2192 A Type 2 SPD is sufficient for protection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1570\" data-end=\"1610\"><strong>LPZ 1 &#8211; Incoming infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1611\" data-end=\"1637\">In this transitional zone:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1778\">\n<li data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1724\">\n<p data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"1724\">The lightning current is partially distributed through the LPS and grounding system;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1778\">\n<p data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1778\">Additional SPDs are installed at the zone boundary.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"1859\">If the PV system is in LPZ 0B and the inverter is placed indoors (LPZ 2), then:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1860\" data-end=\"2056\">\n<li data-start=\"1860\" data-end=\"2004\">\n<p data-start=\"1862\" data-end=\"2004\">A Type 2 SPD on the DC side is sufficient.<br data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"1911\" \/>However, if there is physical coupling with LPZ 0A (e.g. mounting frame bonded to LPS), then:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2056\">\n<p data-start=\"2007\" data-end=\"2056\">A Type 1+2 SPD is required on the DC cabling.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2104\"><strong>LPZ 2 &#8211; Inside the inverter enclosure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2164\">This zone is formed by the metal enclosure of the inverter:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2280\">\n<li data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2222\">\n<p data-start=\"2167\" data-end=\"2222\">Provides additional shielding against induced currents;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2280\">\n<p data-start=\"2225\" data-end=\"2280\">Supplemental SPDs further reduce residual surge energy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2282\" data-end=\"2345\">\u2192 SPDs must be placed as close as possible to the inverter.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive img-responsive alignnone wp-image-3754 size-large img-responsive i\" title=\"EMC zoneconcept\" src=\"https:\/\/conduct.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Schermafbeelding-2021-10-11-om-14.09.11-1024x414.png\" alt=\"EMC zoneconcept\" width=\"1024\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/conduct.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Schermafbeelding-2021-10-11-om-14.09.11-1024x414.png 1024w, https:\/\/conduct.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Schermafbeelding-2021-10-11-om-14.09.11-600x243.png 600w, https:\/\/conduct.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Schermafbeelding-2021-10-11-om-14.09.11-300x121.png 300w, https:\/\/conduct.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Schermafbeelding-2021-10-11-om-14.09.11-768x311.png 768w, https:\/\/conduct.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Schermafbeelding-2021-10-11-om-14.09.11.png 1179w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any questions about the EMC zone concept?
