When do you apply Type 1+2 or just Type 2?

There are different types of surge protectors , but which one do you apply in your PV installation? This has to do with whether or not there is a lightning protection system on the premises. Below you can read in brief which type of SPD you should apply to your PV installation.

If the PV installation is built < 50cm from the lightning protection installation, it should be connected to each other. In this case, the inverter must be protected with a Type 1+2 SPD. ATTENTION: A Type 2 SPD is not sufficient in this case and may ignite on impact!

If the PV plant is built > 50cm from the lightning protection system, it must be installed separately. In this case, the inverter must be protected with a Type 2 SPD. ATTENTION: Sufficient lightning arresters must be present to prevent impacts to the panels.

If a lightning protection system is NOT present, a Type 2 SPD is sufficient.

ATTENTION: in case of a direct impact on the PV installation, there is a chance of arcing at the inverter. This is NOT prevented by a Type 2 SPD. Also in this case, fire is prevented with a Type 1+2 SPD. For this reason, all our PV boxes are equipped with Type 1+2 SPD. In addition, you are also immediately fully equipped for the future!
