CONSEQUENCES DIRECT OR INDIRECT LIGHTNING STRIKES

Lightning can have devastating effects on a solar panel installation. In addition to physical damage to the installation, it also causes bypass diodes to fail. Lightning can cause a diode to fail. This can happen either during a direct lightning strike, whereby a lightning current loads the installation, or during a lightning strike in the vicinity (indirectly), whereby the electromagnetic field of the lightning can cause a current pulse to flow through the bypass diode via induction. This can only be prevented by using a lightning protection system (LPS) supplemented with overvoltage protection in accordance with the NEN-EN-IEC62305 part 4
