When installing solar panels, several factors must be considered to ensure that the building’s fire resistance is not compromised. Above all, the maximum permissible roof load is critical. The point load must never exceed the structural load-bearing capacity of the roof. Measures should be taken to avoid impairing the fire resistance of the building on which the photovoltaic system is installed. Solar modules must not be installed on asbestos-containing roofs. The PV system must be securely fixed to prevent displacement, which could otherwise lead to storm damage or reduced performance.
It is essential to avoid overloading the roof surface with solar panels, as this would hinder periodic inspection and maintenance. Furthermore, for both pitched and flat roofs, suitable fire-resistant materials must be applied underneath the photovoltaic panels and behind the inverters. The solar installation must be designed and implemented in compliance with international standards, specifically IEC 60364-7-712, IEC 60364, and the relevant provisions of IEC 61730 and IEC 61215, ensuring electrical safety, fire protection, and structural integrity.
