Lightning can have devastating effects on a solar panel installation. This can happen with a direct as well as an indirect lightning strike.
Consequences of direct or indirect lightning strikes
Lightning and surge protection are essential for safeguarding solar panel installations against the destructive impact of lightning strikes. Such strikes can cause not only direct physical damage to the system, such as to the panels and cabling, but also indirect damage through the failure of components like bypass diodes. Malfunctioning bypass diodes may lead to reduced system performance and, in some cases, complete operational failure.
In the event of a direct lightning strike, intense current may flow through the installation, damaging components. However, indirect lightning strikes are also hazardous due to the electromagnetic field they generate. This field can induce a current pulse via induction, potentially damaging bypass diodes.
An effective way to mitigate this risk is by installing a lightning protection system (LPS) in accordance with NEN EN IEC 62305 part 4. This system safely diverts lightning current away from the installation into the ground, thereby reducing the impact on solar panels. It is equally critical to implement surge protection devices (SPDs) to guard the system against voltage peaks caused by lightning or other electrical disturbances.
Implementing a robust lightning and surge protection system is a long-term investment in the reliability and lifespan of the PV installation. It offers peace of mind to owners and operators, knowing their investment is protected against the unpredictable forces of nature and electrical failures.
